Piercing Aftercare Instructions & Healing Guide
If you just got pierced—or you’re planning to—this guide covers the basics of piercing aftercare, how to clean a new piercing, and what to do if you’re dealing with a piercing bump. Good aftercare is the difference between an easy heal and weeks of irritation.
The goal of aftercare (keep it clean, keep it calm)
A new piercing is a healing wound.
Your job is to:
• Keep it clean
• Avoid irritation and pressure
• Leave it alone so your body can heal
Over-cleaning, twisting, and sleeping on it are some of the biggest reasons piercings get angry.
What to use (and what not to use)
Use
• Clean hands (every time before touching)
• Saline spray (sterile wound wash saline is ideal)
• Mild soap + water (for gentle cleaning in the shower)
Avoid
• Alcohol, peroxide, Betadine, harsh soaps
• Ointments that block airflow (unless your piercer specifically tells you)
• Tea tree oil directly on fresh piercings (too harsh for many people)
• Twisting/spinning the jewelry “to keep it from sticking” (old myth)
Step-by-step: how to clean a new piercing
Do this 1–2 times per day (more is not better).
1. Wash your hands
• Soap and water, every time.
2. Rinse in the shower
• Let warm water run over the piercing to soften any crust.
3. Clean gently
• Spray saline on the area (front and back if possible).
• If needed, use a small amount of mild soap around the area, then rinse fully.
4. Dry carefully
• Pat dry with clean paper towel or let it air dry.
• Avoid fluffy towels (they can snag and carry bacteria).
5. Leave it alone
• No twisting, no picking crusties, no “checking” it all day.
What to avoid while healing (biggest mistakes)
• Touching it (hands carry bacteria)
• Sleeping on it (especially ear/cartilage)
• Changing jewelry too early
• Swimming (pools, lakes, hot tubs) during early healing
• Makeup, lotions, hair products getting into the piercing (face/ear piercings)
• Tight clothing rubbing (navel/nipple piercings)
• Oral contact during early healing for oral piercings (follow your piercer’s guidance)
If something is constantly getting bumped or snagged, that’s usually the real problem—not “infection.”
Normal vs. not normal (what to watch for)
Normal during healing:
•Mild redness and tenderness the first few days
• Swelling (especially oral piercings early on)
• Clear or pale-yellow fluid that dries into crust
• Itching as it heals
• Occasional soreness if you bumped it
Not normal (come back in / get checked):
• Increasing redness that spreads outward and feels hot
• Thick green or foul-smelling discharge
• Fever or feeling sick
• Severe throbbing pain that’s getting worse
• Jewelry that looks like it’s sinking into the skin (too tight)
• A bump that keeps growing or won’t calm down after improving your routine If you’re unsure, it’s always better to stop by and let us take a look.
Healing times (general guide)
Healing varies by person and placement, but here are common ranges:
• Earlobes: ~6–8 weeks
• Nostril / septum: ~2–6 months
• Lip: ~2–3 months
• Tongue/oral: ~4–8 weeks (swelling early is common)
• Cartilage (helix, conch, tragus, etc.): ~6–12 months
• Navel: ~6–12 months Nipple: ~6–12 months
• Industrial: ~6–12 months
•Dermal: initial heal ~1–3 months (long-term care matters)

Piercing bump help (irritation bump basics)
Most “piercing bumps” are irritation bumps, not infections.
Common causes:
• Sleeping on it
• Snagging it (hair, masks, headphones, clothing)
• Over-cleaning or harsh products
• Jewelry that’s too short/tight
• Changing jewelry too early
What to do:
• Stick to saline 1–2x/day
• Stop twisting/picking
• Reduce pressure (don’t sleep on it; avoid tight clothing)
• Come in so we can check jewelry fit if swelling is an issue
What not to do:
• Don’t burn it with alcohol/peroxide/tea tree oil
• Don’t pop it
• Don’t remove the jewelry on your own if you suspect infection (get checked first)
When to come back in
Come back if:
• You think the jewelry is too tight or sinking
• You have a bump that won’t improve after 7–10 days of proper aftercare
• You want a downsizing (common after swelling goes down)
• You’re ready for a jewelry change and want it done safely
